Extra! Extra! Read All About It!
Turnout was a political magazine, focusing mainly on the issues that mattered most to Toronto residents. More specifically, it was about youth involvement in politics. However, this particular story was focused more on the people, and their individual struggles with politics in different time periods. I interviewed a Holocaust survivor, a political activist from the 1960's era, and a young politician from the modern era. To this day, it remains one of the best pieces I've ever written.
This story focuses on people dealing with mental issues, and how there's always someone to turn to, when they need a helping hand. In fact, the organization Hearing Every Youth Through Youth helped raise awareness of these issues in the community of East York, and helped young people overcome depression by just lending them an extra ear to talk to. I always enjoy covering public events like this, because you don't always know what's going on in the community, unless you actually put yourself out there.
